Leona records second LPGA Victory at the Meijer Classic

Leona Maguire carded a sensational eight-under-par 64 to win the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan on Sunday, reeling off four birdies and an eagle in her final six holes to clinch her second Tour success.

The Cavan star made history in February 2022 when she clinched the Drive On Championship, her first LPGA Tour victory. She now has a second triumph to her name after a magnificent performance in the States.

The 28-year-old leapfrogged Amy Yang and Xiyu Lin to take glory at the $2.5m event and further strengthen her status as one of the tour's elite players.

It was an incredible climax from the Irishwoman, who cranked up the pressure on Yang and Lin until both cracked, the former bogeying 16 and 17, the latter bogeying her final hole.

Maguire - who started the day two lead off the lead - was flawless when the pressure was at its highest. Birdies on 13, 16, 17 and 18, were embellished by an eagle on 14 as she signed off on 21-under-par, three clear of the runners-up.

"I've been playing some really good golf leading into this week and just tried to be patient," she said afterwards.

"It was nice to go bogey free. My goal was to get to 20-under; it was nice to go one better than that.

"You have to play really good golf to win out here. It's tough. It's a really nice feeling to win this one, especially heading into the majors we've got coming up."
