Tyrrell Hatton qualifies for 2023 European Ryder Cup team

Tyrrell Hatton has confirmed his place on the European team for the 2023 Ryder Cup through the World Points List.

The two-time Ryder Cup player will join Major-winning duo Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm on Captain Luke Donald’s side, as well as FedExCup Champion Viktor Hovland, ahead of the biennial contest which is being held for the first time in Italy since its creation in 1927. This will be Hatton’s third consecutive appearance on Team Europe after making his debut at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, Paris, France.

The Englishman will serve as one of the experienced members of Donald’s charges in Italy.

He will be aiming to make it two from two for Ryder Cup wins on European soil, after making his debut as part of Thomas Bjørn’s victorious team at Le Golf National. The memory of defeat at Whistling Straits in 2021 will serve as source of motivation for Hatton and his teammates as they vie to continue their run of winning at home, dating back to 1993.

How did he qualify?

Hatton ended last season with a tie for second at the DP World Tour Championship, the fifth and final Rolex Series event of the year. He brought that confidence into 2023 finishing in a share of seventh place at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in his first DP World Tour appearance of the year.

Top tens followed in quick succession on the PGA TOUR at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational before a final-round, back-nine 29 at THE PLAYERS Championship helped him to a solo second result at TPC Sawgrass. Since then, he has finished in a tie for third at both Wells Fargo and the RBC Canadian Open before a tie for sixth at the Genesis Scottish Open last month.

He has not missed a cut at a Major this year, recording top 20s at both the US PGA and The 151st Open.

Ryder Cup experience

Hatton was an automatic qualifier for the 2018 Ryder Cup, sealing one of four spots on the European Points List. The highlight of his debut appearance was a 3&2 victory alongside Paul Casey in Saturday’s morning four-ball matches – a session that Europe won 3-1 to seize command in Paris.

During his first Ryder Cup on US soil at Whistling Straits, Hatton contributed 1.5 points across the three days of play. He teamed up with Rahm to earn a half point against DeChambeau and Scheffler, before partnering Shane Lowry to a 1 up victory on his second four-ball outing against Tony Finau and Harris English on Saturday.

The 2023 Ryder Cup will take place between September 25 – October 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Rome, Italy.
